ODBC (Open Database Connectivity)

ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) is a standard software interface for the selection of databases in Windows OS originally developed by Microsoft. In this way, the development of database software is facilitated through standardisation of the selection procedure.

To access a database via ODBC, an ODBC driver has to be installed on the client system. ODBC drivers are usually provided by the database software producer.
